Objectives
To provide basic theoretical background on molecular biology and further understand PCR and other related molecular techniques as applied to the diagnosis of infectious diseases.

Competencies being acquired
Lecture:

Understanding the fundamental concepts in molecular biology, describing the steps in Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) as a dignostic tool for infectious diseases and learning Quality Assurance practices and othder considerations in setting up a PCR laboratory.

Laboratory:

    1. Understanding the techniques, practical skills and troubleshooting needed in performing PCR
    2. Performing basic skills needed in PCR by doing practical hands-on activities.
    3. Analyzing DNA sequences using Molecular Evolutionary Genetics Analysis (MEGA) software and searching sequences through BLAST

Number of Days:
Ful worshop – 5 days (2.5 lecture sessions; 2.5 hands-on lab work)
