The National Measles Laboratory (NML) of the Department of Virology was designated as the National Reference Laboratory for Measles and other exanthemata by the Department of Health in 2000. The National Measles Laboratory is also recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2001, and is fully accredited from 2008 up to the present.

It provides support by performing the laboratory confirmation of measles suspect cases identified in the surveillance activities. The NML regularly submits samples for validation to the WHO Western Pacific Regional Reference Laboratory, HK and receives serology and recently molecular proficiency panel as part of External Quality Assessment and participates in the annual on-site review as part of the WHO accreditation.
