The Research Institute for Tropical Medicine houses the laboratory designated by the Department of Health as the Philippine National Influenza Center (PNIC). As a functional, integrated, and sustained National Influenza Center, PNIC supports the country’s influenza surveillance by providing continuous, timely and accurate laboratory results, man power and technical expertise to respond during influenza pandemics and provides policy recommendations for influenza prevention and control in the Philippines. PNIC has also been in partnership with the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) through Capacity-building Cooperative Agreement (CoAg), the initiative that led to the establishment of an Influenza Surveillance Network and Influenza Pandemic Response in the country.
