The Korea International Cooperation for Infectious Diseases (KOICID) Director Dr. Sungmin Kim visited the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) on January 25. The courtesy visit was attended by Ms. Ava Kristy Sy (Virology), Ms. Vina Lea Arguelles (Virology), Mr. Rex Centeno (Virology), and Ms. Ligaya Picazo (LRD).
Since 2015, KOICID has been at the forefront of emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) with its fight against the alarming outbreak of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) in Korea. The outbreak in the country left 186 patients and 39 casualties behind. This led to the government’s decision to establish an international network to study EIDs.
Last July 25, 2018, representatives from RITM and the Asian Foundation for Tropical Medicine Inc., attended the 3rd KOICID/C3Bird meeting at Ramada Plaza Jeju Hotel, Jeju Island Korea. During the meeting, RITM discussed the current status of infectious diseases and sample collection being conducted in the country. The Philippines, through RITM, is part of KOICID’s international network for research on EIDs.
KOICID is expected to grow into a 10-member team – Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Brazil, India, Liberia, Mexico, Philippines, Malaysia – with Cambodia as the recent addition to the network.
